Golf is a game of finesse and control. Swinging hard is no guarantee of a long drive. Practice, precision, instruction and more practice – that is the name of the game. And yet, it is so much more than a game. It is a lesson for life.

NC State is one of only 16 schools in the nation accredited by the PGA of America to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Golf Management (PGM). Yet it is the only east coast program without its own golf course for research and field study. Universities with PGM programs similar to NC State – Clemson, Penn State, and Florida State – all boast a home course. It is time to add this distinction to North Carolina State University.

With its own golf course, research and training facility, and clubhouse, North Carolina State University will be creating an outdoor classroom not only for golfers who love the game, but for NC State students from a variety of disciplines: turfgrass management, professional golf management, parks, recreation and tourism management, and business.

The Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State is an Arnold Palmer Signature Course and will be an 18-hole, 7,210-yard, par 71 public course, with practice range and green. Located in a natural golf state – temperate climate, beautiful terrain, and lush foliage – NC State University is poised to become a brand name in professional golf and turfgrass management programs.

Golf is a $4 billion industry in North Carolina and a $30 billion industry nationwide. This strong sector of commerce demands a growing number of professionals for a variety of subspecialties: golf education, turfgrass management, retail operations and merchandising, accounting, personnel management, marketing, and customer relations, to name a few.
